Category: Business & Career Before I took over as the plant manager at my current employer, I was a supervisor for 4 years. I was never really mentored by anyone, so I had to develop and hone my own management skills, and the four years as a supervisor lent me that opportunity. I remember my previous boss, whose position I now have, telling me and my colleagues how great a motivator I was. He was right. I can motivate a stone to dance. Unfortunately, people are somewhat like that stone. The stone has to want to dance, people need to want to be motivated. Motivating people is fairly easy. Tell them what want to hear. But do it in a way that allows you to accomplish your goals or those set forth by your bosses. The main key to motivating people is, and I know this sounds like a cliche, treating people the way you want to be treated. Treat people with dignity, respect and honor. Listen to their concerns and views. Implement the good in what they state. What if someone commits an infraction of any sort? Tell them about it. They'll be glad you did. Most times, people will not argue with your assessments when, if they are accurate, and after you have developed the relationship of trust and respect that is needed. Even in situations that call for corrective action, dignity and respect must be displayed. You want your people to want to work for you and work out well for you. About the author...
