A couple of years back I moved into an apartment in the downtown area of my city... lots of buildings around.

I was pretty busy with school and wasn't planning on watching much TV... so I didn't want to spend $30-$40/month on cable, but I did want to get decent reception because an antenna just wasn't doing it.

Anyway - I ended up finding out that apparently, Cable companies are legally required to offer inexpensive cable that provides simply the major networks and some local channels. Basically - it gives you good reception.

Now, what they aren't required to do is advertise it.... so you have to ask about it specifically. I remember going to the cable office and asking what the cheapest cable I could get... and it was a $25-$30/mo basic cable deal. Since someone had given me this tip - I then asked if there was just the basic local channels for cheaper... and it was as if I had said the magic password, because then they told me about "Limited" service which was $7/mo and gives you local channels/networks.

That's pretty much all I needed - the major networks... so I got it and have been happy with it. Unfortuantely, since they aren't really making any money off of it, they likely won't waive the install fee as they usually do if you sign up for one of their premium packages. So, figure another $30+ for installation.
