If you're like me, and you love small furry creatures, you probably have a guinea pig, hamster, or some rodent sorts. The problem is that the cages and the toys that these animals need are unbelievably expensive and always not quite what you're looking for. A small furry creature needs space to run around, to play, to grow. You can't offer that with a store bought cage. So here's a method to fashion a cage that can grow as your pets grow and multiply.

First, you'll want to have the cage on the floor. The key is that you can't fall off the floor. And if you can't fall off the floor, you can't hurt yourself. (Many grandmothers will tell you this.) So once you've found a nice corner or area for your little friends, you'll need some carpeting for them. I would buy some rugs/mats that have a rubber backing--the kind that you can put outdoors. That way, while you're potty training the creatures (and they *can* be potty trained) you won't ruin your floor or carpeting, especially if you rent, like I do. Right now you can see how the cage will be expandable. All you have to do is buy more mats and overlap them.

Next, you'll need walls. The best method is to buy those square grids that you put together to make cubicles. I believe one product name is "The Cube". This way, all you need to do to expand the cage is to add more grids to the wall.

All that's left are the "housing" and toys. For the bed, just buy a big rubbermaid container that's shaped to slide under the bed. It's plastic, it's durable, and it's super easy to clean. For the toys, you'll need tubes and trinkets. The tubes that the pet stores sell are too expensive. You can get quiality tubes from a Home Depot or Hechinger's--PVC tubes. Just make sure to get large enough ones. I use 4" ones. Toys are not a problem. Any cat toy is good enough. It's going to be a chew toy, so make sure it'll be easy for them to grasp in their mouth. Throw an old flannel pillow case in the corner and you're set!
