There could be many causes for diarhea, but there is really one basic rule....Drink lots of water. In the past, doctors would try to cure the disease rather than the symptom and people would die of dehydration. Eventually, they realized that most patients would get better by themselves, if they could only keep themselves hydrated. So it bears repeating to drink lots of water.
Along the same lines, consider getting rehydration tablets which add a bit of a sweet taste to the water and include nutrients which help the body absorb the water (similar to the effect of Gatorade). Most pharmacies will carry this, even in lesser developed countries. Also, if one gets a case of traveller's diarhea in a tropical climate, a young coconut will often do the same trick.
Finally, I would advise against anti-diarhea medecine which prevents the release of one's bowels. The nasty bugs which are offending one's stomach need to be released and stopping this process can prolong the problem....
Of course, this is just one man's advice based on my personal experience with the subject so take my advice with a grain of salt....
