Aikido is a fairly popular martial art originating from East Asia. There are several branches of Aikido and I spent a few years studying the Aikikai form. While I am certainly no master, one of the great things about this discipline is that someone with no previous knowledge can understand part of the power of the discipline through a technique known as the unbendable arm.
Let me first explain what this illustrates. Aikido focuses more on using an opponents energy and the power of correct mindset (throws and holds) rather than on punches and kicks. Applied to life, it shows how force often leads to force returned, while relaxation can often be stronger. The unbendable arm shows how a change in mindset accomplishes this in real life.
This demonstration requires 2 attempts to illustrate the difference.
First, extend ones arm away from one's body with the palm facing the ceiling and the joint of the elbow also facing the ceiling. One's arm should naturally bend upwards towards one's body. Now have someone attempt to bend the arm while you resist. TAKE CARE THAT YOU DO NOT STRESS THE ARM UNNATURALLY! The person should have superior leverage and be able to bend the arm at the elbow. Even if they do not succeed, by resisting, your arm will tire quickly.
Now try it again, but instead of resisting their attempts to bend your arm, extend your arm and think of it as a straight pole. Relax, pick an object which your arm is pointing towards and pretend that your arm is attached to this object. Do not try to resist the person bending your arm but instead concentrate on the attachment between your arm and the object and above all, relax. You will find that not only is your arm now unbendable, but more importantly, it requires far less energy to resist.
This is a simple illustration of aikido feeling which can be done by anyone.
