I drink a lot of soda. ;)

As a result, I figured it'd be nice to try and find out how to make it myself for convenience and possible savings of money... I remembered in the 80's there were some commercials for your own fountain soda machine where your buy that multi-buttoned nozzle and get soda right there in your home. Since I was like 14 years old at the time, I didn't pursue it, but thought it was a cool idea.

Anyway, after deciding I needed this unlimited supply of soda, I went looking around on the web and in the phone book. Initially, I wanted to get one of those nozzles you see behind bar's in restaurants. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any consumer-oriented ones. The ones I found were intended for businesses, and as a result were costly, and huge.

After asking around on some newsgroups, I ended up finding one called the Carbonator (can't locate the URL now) - the company was located in California. The machine was nice and simple, and all contained. You placed some syrup in your cup, placed it under this device which looked like a coffee machine. Place cold water on top, press a button to carbonate, and then dispense into your cup w/ the syrup in it. The disadvantage was that the cost for everything didn't really save you much money from buying soda from the store.

After giving up for a while, I found http://www.sodajerk.com. Which was the best solution I found so far... and works pretty well. It's not as "pretty" as you might want, but it works and is relatively inexpensive.

What it involves is a CO2 canister, a few 2 liter bottles with a special top to connect to the CO2, and some syrup.

The basic idea is to get the CO2 into the water to get the fizziness of soda. To do this, you need cold water, and some mechanical action. You mix the syrup with water, connect up the CO2, and shake the 2 liter bottle as the pressurized CO2 enters the bottle. After a minute or so, you've got carbonated soda!

Works well, and you can buy soda syrup from them as well. They also provide options for purchasing locally.

If anyone knows of any better solutions or cheap sources of syrup, let me know by leaving comments below.
