Jazz music has been called "America's Classical Music" and a delicate fusion between African and European music in America.
Perhaps you know little about it but would like to become more deeply involved with it. Where to begin?
For Beginners:
1) Get a couple of books. One should be a guide to CDs. The Penguin Guide by Cook and Morton is good as is the MusicHound Guide to Jazz.
Then, a history book, like Blues People by Elvin Jones or Jazz Is by Nat Hentoff.
2) Also, be sure to get a copy of Kind of Blue by Miles Davis. This is a classic album that was recorded in 1959. Listen to it 100 times. This is serious.
Notice the interaction among the instruments. Try to feel things. It is emotional and cerebral.
Then get more CDs... maybe some "best of" compilations to get a broad understanding. Jazz is 100 years old and is a broad umbrella. No style sounds much like another, though they overlap historically.
3) See some live jazz. If you live in a city with a jazz club, go. The visual aspect of jazz is very important. Since it is spontaneously composed music, hearing it live is vital!
Eventually, jazz, which is a secret order, will click and you will become more enveloped in it.
For Intermediate Listeners:
1) There are complete collections that you should have. By now you will know what they are (ex. The Complete Bud Powell on Verve).
2) Read some biographies and lots of liner notes. Try to understand the complexities of the solos, timing, and styles. Try to listen to styles objectively. Buy CDs you might not necessarily thing you'll enjoy and learn to enjoy them, which you will.
For Advanced:
1) Join a jazz list-serv.
2) Support the live shows.
3) Buy CDs. Get the Mosaic catalog (mosaicrecords.com).
Become obsessive. Put a postcard of Billie Holiday or Monk on your desk at work.
