First of all, how you can make money on the internet depends on what role you see yourself playing. In general, there are 3 broad roles. These three roles are Individual, Webmaster, and Business/Corporation.
Individual
This is certainly the broadest category and requires no special skills beyond getting onto the Internet. Everyone and their mother falls into this category. Due to the great numbers involved, companies have been aiming at this large group to utilize their services in exchange for some monetary compensation.
Buying/Selling
Just like in the real world, you can make money by selling personal items in the classifieds -- except with the Internet, your audience just got a whole lot bigger.

Pay to Surf/Read

The payouts are generally pretty small, but you can make enough to offset your internet connection or so.
Surveys
