There are good reasons to choose a purebred or a mixed-breed dog- what you choose depends on your needs or desires. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each, plus a few common myths:

Advantages of a Purebred Dog
- If your dog is from a reputable breeder (see my article on what such a breeder is), you know what it should look and act like when it grows up
- If you need a dog for a specific job (like herding or police work) you can pick a breed that has aptitude at that sport
- If you need a dog with specific qualities (small size, nonshedding, active, etc.) you can choose a dog from a breed with those qualities
- If you are interested in conformation dog showing, you must have a purebred dog

Disadvantages of a Purebred Dog
- It may take you a lot longer to find the dog that you want
- You will pay more for the dog initially (but see the article on the costs of owning a dog)

Myths about Purebred Dogs
- They are not less healthy than mixed-breed dogs, if purchased from a reputable breeder
- There are pets in every litter of "show dogs"- purebreds are not just for snobs
- There is no money in breeding dogs responsibly, so don't think you can recoup your investment in a purebred dog by breeding it!

Advantages of a Mixed-Breed Dog
- Every one is unique!
- By acquiring a dog from a pound or shelter, you can save a life
- You can see a wide variety of adorable dogs every day at your local shelter

Disadvantages of a Mixed-Breed Dog
- If you get a puppy, you don't know what it will look like when fully-grown
- Mixed-breed puppies are less likely to have been carefully raised than purebred puppies from a responsible breeder

Myths about Mixed-Breed Dogs
- They are not more healthy genetically or physically than well-bred purebreds
