This one is pretty simple. Dogs don't belong outdoors 24/7.

Dogs are pack animals. As their owners, we become their substitute pack. A dog separated from the pack is an insecure, nervous animal. One of the chief reasons that dogs exhibit behaviors we regard as problems- like chewing, digging, and constant barking- is insecurity. Just as nervous and worried people pace and chew on pencils, nervous and worried dogs dig, bark, and chew.

In days gone past, some dogs never set foot in a house and still led fulfilling lives, because their owners were outdoors working with them. A working farm dog, stock dog, or hunting dog gets lots of interaction with its people and spends the time alone sleeping. But today, an outdoor dog gets little interaction and doesn't make much of a pet.

Why do people keep dogs outside? Lots of reasons, but there are good solutions for all those reasons.
- If the dog sheds too much, learn to groom it properly.
- If the dog is destructive, learn to exercise it and how to train it to behave in the house. Leaving the dog outside only creates a vicious cycle of more destructiveness. The same is true if the dog is rambunctious and rowdy in the house.
- If the dog isn't housebroken, learn effective ways of housebreaking.

In short, if you feel you must keep a dog outside, you probably shouldn't have a dog. The greatest joy that a dog can bring is in its relationship with us-and an outdoor dog never really learns to participate in that relationship.
