I've just spent the better part of a 3-day weekend trying to fix a problem that began plaguing my Apple Studio Display 17" monitor (which I use on a blue&white Mac G3 400). It began acting rather strange--requiring me to cycle [turn off and on] the power every time the screen saver kicked in (which put the monitor in sleep mode, the power light going from green to amber) and after any reboot. I tried just about everything to work this one out, and had given up and began disassembling my sysetm to take the screen in to a service center. In the process of pulling the monitor from the system, I unplugged the screen's power cable, and as I was doing so, it occurred to me that for all my attempts to get to the bottom of this situation, I had not ever killed power to the screen. When I physically unplugged it and then plugged it back in, it worked like a charm.
Today's monitors contain quite a bit of "intelligence," relying on a small, internal computer to properly communicate with the host machine. The increasing complexity of screens today increases the chance that the on-board hardware will, well, need a "reboot." Such a reboot of the monitor, so to speak, does not ever really occurr if you leave your system on 24/7 and rely on the screen saver/sleep mode to turn the monitor off for you. So--if things get squirrely with your display, don't neglect to disconnect all power from the screen...ideally _early_ in the process...
