To get your skydiving license, first find a drop zone near you. If you're having trouble finding one, go to www.uspa.org.
This article describes getting your license via the Accelerated Freefall (AFF) program. There are other ways, but AFF is the one I'm familiar with.
First, there's a six hour class which will teach you the basics of skydiving: exiting the plane, basic body position, landing, and emergency procedures.
Then there are a series of seven jumps, each teaching you a new concept. You'll have an instructor or two accompanying you with each jump. When you land he (or they) will decide if you're prepared to move onto the next level.
The first jump consists of getting out of the plane, falling really fast, and then pulling your ripcord. If you can do that, congratulations, you pass.
In the second jump, you have to turn 90 degrees left, 90 degress right, and repeat. The instructors are holding on to you so be sure to give a little extra push with your arm when you turn - you've got three people to move. If you can do that and pull your ripcord, congratulations, you pass.
In the third jump, the instructors let go. Just like the first one, fall really fast then pull your ripcord.
Each jump is progresively more difficult and less expensive. Eventually you pass all seven levels and you owe beer, but wait, you don't have a license yet. You still need some advanced instruction called Level 8. These are basic two-way formations with an instructor. If you get through these, do a bunch of solos, land somewhat accurately on occasion, and pass a written exam, congratulations, you have your "A" license!
