In Spring, thoughts often turn to new life and growth. What better way to get in touch with the energies of the Earth than to plant a seed and watch it grow? Tending to plant can be a very rewarding experience, but don't get too upset if your first attempt net less than perfect results. Like any craft, gardening can take time to master.

There are many ways to turn an ordinary gardening experience into a magickal one. First think of your Magickal Purpose. Do you have a big backyard where you have Sabbat celebrations or gatherings during the day? Then you may want to plant a Butterfly Garden, full of sweet, colorful, butterfly attracting flowers. Imagine your Midsummer celebration being attended by beautiful flittering butterflys! Do you have a secluded yard where you celebrate the Esbats by the light of the Moon? Then you may want to plant a Moonlight Garden, full of white flowers and light colored foliage. Imagine the beauty of the moonlight reflecting and higlighting fragrant white blooms!

Other more "practical" magickal gardening ideas:

An Aromatherapy Garden, with plants and flowers chosen only for their scent;

A Color-therapy Garden, with plants and flowers chosen only for their color;

An Herbal Garden, with plants and flowers chosen for their cooking, healing or other magickal use;

And then there is perhaps my favorite, a Tea Garden with plants and flowers chosen because they make wonderful teas, magickal or otherwise.

Of course, any of these ideas can be easily combined to create your own custom Magickal garden to suit your purpose. And don't worry if you do not have a big yard or lots of time.

Small container gardens can be equally rewarding as large yard plots, and containers mean you can grow year round, even inside your house during winter. Many herbs and flowers that are good for magickal use are perfectly at home in a large pot. With just a little work, you can have a Magickal Garden of your own.
