SHUTTER SPEED

As I mentioned earlier, shutter speed is not the same as film speed. Whilst the shutter speed setting on the camera MAY be influenced by the film speed in use, it is generally separate and independent of the film speed.

Shutter speed is one of the camera functions or settings. It is for controlling the length of time, or for how long, the film is exposed. With a given amount of light, a film will require a suitable amount of exposure, then the shutter speed is one way of controlling that amount.

If a camera has adjustable shutter speed settings, most likely they will be something like this:

1 2 4 8 15 30 60 125 250 1000 .....

Some older cameras may use slightly different numbers, such as 10 instead of 8, or 100 instead of 125

Some fully automatic cameras may not show these settings, but instead settings such as 'A' for Auto or 'P' for program, so you may not be able to control this part of the exposure.

Actually, these numbers normally represent fractions of a second, so the number 2 in the above sequence is actually 1/2 second, the number 30 is actually 1/30 second, etc. This means that the lower numbers are longer (slower) speeds which produce more exposure, while higher numbers are shorter (faster) speeds, which produce less exposure.

Conveniently, each consecutive setting produces half or twice the exposure of the next settings either side. So 1/30 second produces half the exposure of 1/15 second, or twice the exposure of 1/60 second, which makes it easy to calculate changes of exposure.
