Ok, first off, if you didn't already know this....GETTING A SUMMER JOB WILL COST YOU IN THE LONG RUN!!! That's right, now you have an excuse NOT to get a summer job. It will count as income and this will decrease your aid package. My advice is to go to school in the summer. You'll get done much faster and it's usually cheaper to go in the summer.
Some other tips:
1.If you come from a single parent family, try to keep it that way! Your new stepparent's income will count in your total family income, even if you know that there isn't a chance that they are going to help you with your education!
2. Get work-study. It won't screw up aid and it makes you look good. And most of the time these jobs are much more understanding about needing time off for a big test or letting you study when you aren't busy.
3. Join AmeriCorps. Yeah, Ok, the hours per money for educational award is no where near min wage. But it won't take away from your aid and it's great experience. Trust me. When I went to apply to graduate school and to get a job, they were VERY impressed. And I had the educational award to help pay for the whole thing as well. And you can use that ed. award to buy a computer! Oh yeah, and you're helping out people in need and providing a public service. So, you get that warm, fuzzy feeling as a bonus!
These are just some suggestions above and beyond the obvious, like apply for scholarships.....
