Here are some preventive measures to help avoid getting Lyme Disease (LD) and help stop its spread.
1. Keep grass and weeds mowed in recreational areas. Spray heavily infested areas.
2. Avoid walking through tall grass and low brush. Avoid sitting on grass or logs in infested areas.
3. Tuck pants into boots or long socks; tuck long-sleeved shirts into pants and wear closed shoes when hiking. Wear light colored clothing and check frequently for ticks. Do a buddy search
for back, neck and hair.
4. Examine household pets for ticks on a regular basis. Have them wear tick collars. Do not let them on furniture or in beds. An excellent product from veterinarians is called Front Line. (Put a small amount between the animal's shoulder blades. It is absorbed and works systemically. Kills any ticks already on and prevents others from becoming attached.) Really works! Remember, pets can get LD, too.
5. Exterminate rodents - they serve as hosts for immature ticks.
6. Move wood piles and bird feeders away from house.
7. Spray insect repellent containing DEET on skin or Permithrin on clothes.
