Being in high school, I tend to get a lot of English essays to write on a variety of topics. I have seen many students write lengthy essays that do not go anywhere - they are merely an assortment of words loosely dealing with the topic at hand. I have been privy to an exceptional English teacher, and have been taught to write fantastic essays. I have some key tips to give to other students who generally get lost in essays.
The key to a successful essay is a solid organization of your facts - know what you want to say for each of the 3 body paragraphs and your intro and conclusion paragraphs. Formal essays are meant to be persuasive, so if you, the writer, don't know what you are trying to persuade, the audience will not be persuaded. You must organize your key points in an organized fashion.
Topic: Why did Rome fall?
Remember to back up your statements.
Paragraph 1: Internal military and government corruption caused Rome to be susceptible to invasions.
Supporting details:
A. Soldiers found it more worthwhile to plunder people than defend Rome.
B. ...
C. ...
Paragraph 2: Many invasions from Barbarian peoples.
Supporting details:
A. Rome was attacked from many sides, including the Goths, Visigoths, etc..
Etcetera
Have a clear statement or purpose for each paragraph, and it will then be easy to back up your ideas.
This is how a successful essay is formed, and it will guarantee success! Remember to back up all your reasons with supporting details, as I have demonstrated. Good luck, and most important, enjoy!
