Do you envy people with a well-trained dog? Do you have a rambunctious mutt that's driving you nuts? Don't despair- you can train your dog!
This article explains some of the basic ideas behind successful dog training. After you read it, you can go on to the specifics of how to train your dog to perform various useful behaviors.
First of all, a few rules for success:
Training should be fun! If you and your dog are enjoying yourselves, you're more likely to succeed.
Before you start your training session for the day, have your goals in mind.
Keep training sessions short. 3 short sessions of 5-10 minutes each will teach your dog more than 1 30-minute session.
Timing is everything in dog training. Video yourself or have a friend watch you to make sure that you reward your dog as he does the behavior you ask for- not afterwards! Studies have shown that one of the biggest differences between pro trainers and amateurs is that the pros give their rewards in a timely manner while the amateurs are late.
Many "traditional" trainers rely on punishment. The method I use does not rely on physical punishment. You and your dog will both be happy!
The quickest and easiest way to train a happy working dog is with food. You can use the food to lure the dog into position and to make the behavior really rewarding for the dog. Don't worry- you'll fade the use of food out quickly!
Sometimes we expect too much from our dogs too soon. Dogs are really bad about generalizing. Just because they know "sit" in the living room, this does not mean that they know what "sit" means in the park. You'll have to practice each new command in a variety of places before your dog knows it everywhere. But remember, the more commands you teach your dog, the more quickly he'll generalize new ones!
Dogs of any age can be trained; in fact, puppies learn the fastest. Training is of immense benefit no matter the age of your dog. The well-trained dog can be your companion everywhere, while the untrained dog languishes at home. Train your dog and you'll reinforce that special bond that is what makes dog ownership so enjoyable!
