Have you been working on your Macintosh and suddenly it stops working? Here's something you can do to get control back - at least for a little while.

Definition: An Application is the same thing as a Program. Examples: Microsoft Word, Netscape, Internet Explorer.

First, how do you know your Mac has crashed/frozen?

Usually, it's pretty obvious - your mouse may stop moving around. However, sometimes you still have control of you mouse, but nothing else will work.

Doug Brown offers this tip:

If you are not sure if your computer is frozen or not, and your computer's menubar clock is shown and it is set to display seconds, you can look at the seconds and see if they are changing. If they don't unfreeze within maybe 30 seconds then your computer probably crashed.

Force Quit

In certain cases, you can "force quit" an application with Mac OS. What this does is takes the application that is in control of the computer and shuts it down.

The application in control is usually the one that caused the computer to stop working.

When you Force Quit an application, it does this very abruptly and does not allow the application to do any "clean up". What this means is that you will lose any unsaved data associated with that application, and it will leave the entire system a little "unstable".

If all works well, however, your other applications will still be working and you can save any unsaved work. You should do this quickly, however, and restart your computer as soon as possible.

How to do it:

Press

(option - command - escape)

This should bring up a white dialog box that asks you if you want to Force Quit the application. Click OK, and cross your fingers.

If that doesn't work:

Well, if that doesn't work, your only real option left is to restart your computer. You can accomplish this by pressing the power button on the computer or pressing CONTROL - COMMAND - RESET on your keyboard. (Let go of the CONTROL key last)

Good luck.
