Solo hikes, particularly long hikes in remote areas, require thought and planning. I have gone on many long solo hikes in the Yellowstone backcountry, during my time working on a backcountry trail crew in Yellowstone Park. Yellowstone has special hazards for hikers, especially solo hikers.

One of the biggest hazards is bears and how to avoid a close encounter. Hikers in the park usually belong to one of two schools of thought, those who think it important to hike with bear bells, small bells very similar to sleigh bells which a hiker will attach to their backpack or walking stick, and those who think the idea is shear foolishness.

One group folks think that the bells are the best means of letting the bears know you are chugging along the trail and the time (for the bear) to hide is now. Basically, you don't want to surprise a bear.

The others believe (or joke) that the bells are an advertisement for dinner. I would personally coat myself in pig lard and hike before donning bear bells (well, maybe not).

Not only do I think the bells annoying to listen to, but also, anytime you are in the front country they are still jingling and rattling away. I do know a couple of folks who have had close encounters with bears, and I did not want too close an encounter myself. As an alternative, you could just be sure to make a lot of noise when walking into a wooded area or stream.
