You ever get a phone call in the middle of dinner -- and it's a telemarketer trying to sell you something? And it's very hard to get off the phone when them -- so you just have to be rude in the end.
No one likes these calls. And they finally did something about it.
The Federal Trade Commission has started a national Do Not Call list. This list lets consumers sign up to a list that telemarketers must check. Telemarketers may not call phone numbers that are on the registry.
If you sign up before August 1st, 2003, your registration won't go into effect until October 1st.
If you sign up after August 1st, the telemarketers have 3 months before honoring the list. So you better sign up while the have the chance. Once on the list, it lasts for 5 years.
Unfortunately, there are some loopholes -- poltical organizations, charities, telephone surveyers and companies you do business with are exempt from the list.
If a compnay doesn't comply, they can get fined up to $11,000 per call.
You can sign up online: www.donotcall.gov
