The print screen ([prntscrn], [printscrn/sysrq]) key on a keyboard can be a little misleading.
It's actually a throwback to the days of DOS. Older DOS programs would use the [printscrn] key to initiate a print job.
In the world of Windows (3.1x/95/98) the [prntscrn] key has a different use.
Pressing [prntscrn] in Win 3.1x/95/98 causes Windows to 'capture' an image of your desktop to the clipboard (a small portion of memory that windows uses to buffer things such as cut and paste operations).
To use this feature, you could simply display your desktop, press [printscrn], go into Write or Wordpad (To load Wordpad, click on: Start > Programs > Applications > Wordpad).
Then select Edit > Paste from the menu bar. Viola! You should now see your desktop as a picture within Wordpad.
To edit the image, you will need to paste it into a paint program
Win 3.1:
Applications folder, then open Paint
Win95/98:
Start > Programs > Applications > Paint
From either of these programs (Wordpad, Paint) you will be able to print the screen by clicking File > Print.
