Parakeets are not as fragile as people assume. Much like any pet, all they need is to be taken care of correctly. They can live 10+ years - my mother and father own one that is now 13 or so years old, and he is as healthy as a baby bird.

  • When you own one, just make sure that you don't force it to "like" you - that will cause a bad temper.
  • Try and keep them away from direct sunlight, and from cold drafts: those (moreso the latter) will cause them to get sick.
  • Make sure the cage is big enough for it to move around fom pirch to pirch comfortably.
  • Clean the cage often, 2-3 times a week, depending on how dirty the cage gets.
  • Fresh food daily, fresh water daily. If their food gets too old, sometimes they will go on a hunger strike, and if their water is not cleaned, bacteria can grow and cause sickness.
  • Make sure you have toys for your birdie, too, just something for them to talk to or preen.
  • Another thing to do for your bird (all the birds i have lived with do this: parakeets, cockatiels, and conures) is to give the bird a bath either in a shallow cup or bowl.....they like to make themselves look pretty.
  • The last thing you should do, and i have met alot of people that say "No way" to this, is to let your bird be free. Don't make it sit in it's cage all day, they like to get out and be with people.
  • If the flying bothers you, you can have their wings clipped. Clipping does not hurt the bird, the feathers grow back.

Well, that's all I can think of right now....Bye!
