I liked the potato "heating pad" idea I just read:
I have another idea for a homemade heating pad that we use regularly and they last a very long time, if made correctly.
1. Use sturdy fabric (denim, heavy flannel, even terry cloth) and make a bag approximately 2 1/2 - 4 inches wide and as long at you want your heating pad to be. A foot long bag is a great size for most aches and pains!
2. Sew up all three sides and most of the 4th and then pour in either flax seeds or brown rice. Fill the bag approximately 3/4 full with the rice/flax seed.
3. Stitch the remainder closed and it's ready for use!
4. Microwave in ONE minute (ONLY) increments until it is the desired warmth and be careful, this can get very hot! Shake the rice bag after each minute to distribute the warmed rice evenly. Be careful NOT to over microwave. It will continue to "cook" for a little bit.
The heat will last quite a while :)
Happy heating!
